How to become an endurance official?
Thank you for your interest in applying to become an ENDURANCE OFFICIAL. It is important that you read the following background information before completing the Application Form
- What requirements do I have to satisfy in order to join as an Endurance Official?
We are looking for people who have already been exposed to the endurance sport and have therefore had relevant experience either in terms of being a competitor, an instructor, or even as a parent of competing children/juniors. Good communication ability (both verbal and written) is essential, together with a very proactive attitude to learning. It is also crucial that you have TIME to dedicate to learning.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
- Have an equestrian background
- Be familiar with the FEI General Regulations, FEI Endurance Rules, FEI Veterinary Rules and NAMEF RULES AND REGULATIONS
- Accept the code of Conduct for officials
- Be endorsed by your National Federation
- Must be fit enough for the job
- Soft skills in order to interact effectively and harmoniously
- You cannot be an Official and Rider/Time keeper at an event.
Remember that you will need to have regular access to the web-site – all our communications on seminars, clinics, and other matters are published on the website.
- Training Procedure:
In order to progress through your training as a Judge/Steward, you will be required to undertake the following:
- Pass the FOUNDATION COURSE FOR ENDURANCE
- https://campus.fei.org
- Register on FEI CAMPUS with your email address if you do not have a FEI number.
- Pass all the content which is listed under the FOUNDATION COURSE:
- WHAT IS THE FEI?
- HORSEMANSHIP STUDY
- COMPETITION MANIPULATION.
- FOUNDATION COURSE ITSELF
- At the end you need to pass all four courses (high-lighted in bold above)
- After the FOUNDATION COURSE is done, you need to do the:
- LEVEL 1- ENDURANCE – JUDGES & STEWARDS COURSE
- Forward your “results mail from FEI” to the Endurance delegate so that this can be verified with the FEI.
- Pass an open book exam related to the FEI ENDURANCE RULES, FEI VETERINARY REGULATIONS, FEI GENERAL REGULATIONS AND NAMEF RULES AND REGULATIONS.
- Officiate as an Official during four (4) Endurance Events within a period of twenty four (24) months under the supervision of an FEI JUDGE, of which two (2) events need to be outside your region.
- You are required to undertake an examination on the rules every 2 to 3 years to ensure that you stay updated when the FEI updates/approves new rule changes.
- ROLE AT NATIONAL EVENTS:
- Fulfil the position of Judge and Steward at the event.

- Send an Official report after every event to the NAMEF SECRETARY GENERAL. The Secretary General will send the report template to you before your event.
- You will NOT be a Technical Delegate (TD) at any event.
A NAMEF Official Logbook is available in which you should record all your work activities and have it signed by the Presiding Judge - unsigned activities do not carry any weight.

JUDGE AND STEWARD:
- LEVEL 1 JUDGE AND STEWARD:
Course requirements:
- You need to be registered as an Official on the FEI WEBSITE through NAMEF
- English language proficiency
- Pass the FOUNDATION COURSE FOR OFFICIALS ON FEI CAMPUS

- Have to attended one mentor ride as a Steward
- Have to attended one mentor ride as a Ground Jury Member
- Pass the Online FEI Level 1 Course for Judges and Stewards on FEI CAMPUS
- On passing the Level 1 examination, applicants are listed as a Level 1 Judge and Steward in the FEI Database
Role at FEI events:
- Ground Jury member at CEI 1*, 2* and 3* events
- Steward at CEI 1*, 2* and 3* events
Status maintenance as Level 1 Judge and Steward:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES (Competency-base Evaluation system)
- Have acted as Level 1 Judge and Steward at least twice within a period of 3 years

- LEVEL 2 JUDGE AND STEWARD: (ONLINE AND ON SITE)
Course requirements:
- Speak and understand English (as above)
- Have been a FEI LEVEL 1 Judge and Steward for at least 1 year
- Have acted as FEI LEVEL 1 Judge and Steward at 3 CEI’s during the current or preceding year of the application
- NATIONAL OFFICIALS wishing to enter a Level 2 Endurance Officials course and coming from an FEI approved Education System must:
- Have passed the FEI FOUNDATION COURSE for Endurance Officials during the current or preceding year.
Role at FEI events:
- Ground Jury Member at CEI 1*, 2* and 3*
- Steward at CEI 1*, 2*, 3*
Status maintenance as Level 2 Judge and Steward:
- Fulfil the requirements, Level 2 CES
- Have acted as Level 2 Judge and Steward at least 2 times within 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed an FEI Level 2 Course for Endurance Judge and Steward
- LEVEL 3 COURSE FOR ENDURANCE JUDGE (ONLINE AND ON SITE)
Course requirements:
- Speak and understand English (as above)
- Have been listed as FEI LEVEL 2 Judge for a minimum of 2 years
- Have acted as a member of the Ground Jury at a minimum of 6 FEI events within the last 3 years (1 must be abroad and 1 must be a FEI3*)
Roles at FEI events:
- Ground Jury member at all types of FEI events
- President of the GJ at FEI 1*,2*, 3*
- Foreign Judge at FEI 3*
Status maintenance as Level 3 Judge and Steward:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES
- Have acted as Level 3 Judge at least 3 times within 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed a FEI Level 3 Course for Endurance Judge
- LEVEL 4 COURSE FOR ENDURANCE JUDGE (ON SITE):
Course requirements:
- Speak and understand English (as above)
- Have been listed as an FEI Level 3 Judge for a minimum of 2 years
- Have acted as a member of the Ground Jury at a minimum of 3 CEI’s
- Have acted as a Foreign Judge at 1 CEI3* during the current or preceding year
- Have received 6 positive assessments from the TD during the above assignments.
- On passing the Level 4 examination, applicants are listed as a Level 4 Endurance Judge
Roles at FEI events:
- Ground Jury Member at all types of CEI’s
- President of the Ground Jury at all types of CEI’s
- Foreign Judge at all types of FEI events
Status maintenance as Level 4 Judge and Steward:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES
- Have acted as Level Judge at least 3 times within 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed an FEI LEVEL 4 COURSE for Endurance Judge
TECHNICAL DELEGATE:
- LEVEL 3 COURSE FOR ENDURANCE TECHNICAL DELEGATE (ONLINE AND ON SITE)
Course requirements:
- Speak and understand English (as and above)
- Have been listed as an FEI LEVEL 2 Judge and or Steward for a minimum of 2 years
- Have acted as a member of the Ground Jury at a minimum of 6 CEI’s within the last 3 years (1 must be abroad and 1 must be a CEI 3*)
- On passing the Level 3 examination, applicants are listed as a Level 3 Endurance Technical Delegate in the FEI Database
Roles at event:
- Technical Delegate (TD) at CEI 1*, 2*, 3*
Status maintenance:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES
- Have acted as Level 3 TD at least 3 times within 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed an FEI LEVEL 3 COURSE for Endurance Technical Delegates
- LEVEL 4 COURSE FOR ENDURANCE TECHNICAL DELEGATE (ON SITE)
Course requirements:
- Speak and understand English (as above)
- Have been listed as an FEI Level 3 TD for a minimum of 2 years
- Have acted as a member of the Ground Jury at a minimum of 3 CEI3*
- Have acted as a Technical Delegate at 2 CEI3* during the current or preceding year
- Have acted as Technical Delegate at 1 CEI3* in a Foreign Country during the current or preceding year.
- Have received 6 positive assessments for the PGJ during the above assignments.
- On passing the Level 4 Examination, applicants are listed as a Level 4 Endurance Technical Delegate in the FEI Database.
Roles at FEI events:
- Technical Delegate at all the types of CEI’s
Status maintenance:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES
- Have acted as Level 4 Technical Delegate at least 3 times in 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed an FEI LEVEL 4 Course for Endurance Technical Delegates.
ENDURANCE STEWARDS:
- LEVEL 3 COURSE FOR ENDURANCE STEWARD (ONLINE AND ON SITE)
Course requirements:
- Speak and understood English (as above)
- Have been listed as an FEI Level 2 Steward for a minimum of 2 years
- Have acted as Steward at a minimum of 6 CEI’s within the last 3 years
- must be abroad and 1 must be a CEI3*)
- On passing the Level 3 examination, applicants are listed as a Level 3
Endurance Steward in the FEI Database.
Roles at FEI events:
- Chief Steward and Steward at CRI 1*, 2*, 3*
Status maintenance:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES
- Have acted as Level 3 Steward at least 3 times within 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed an FEI Level 3 Course for Endurance Steward
- LEVEL 4 COURSE FOR ENDURANCE STEWARD (ON SITE):
Course requirements:
- Speak and understand English (as above)
- Have been listed as an FEI Level 3 Steward for a minimum of 2 years
- Have acted as Steward at a minimum of 3 CEI’s 3*
- Have acted as Chief Steward at 2 CEI 3*
- Have acted as Chief Steward at 1 CEI 3* in a Foreign Country
- Have received 6 positive assessments from the PGJ during the above
assignments.
- On passing the Level 4 examination, applicants are listed as a Level 4
Endurance Steward in the FEI Database.
Roles at FEI events:
- Chief Steward and Steward at all types of CEI’s
Status maintenance:
- Fulfil the requirements of the CES
- Have acted as Level 4 Steward at least 3 times within 3 years
Transfer up:
- Have passed an FEI Level 4 Course for Endurance Steward
How long does it take to progress to the next level?
This is entirely dependent on your level of commitment and the number of judging assignments you have completed.
Required membership to National body:
In addition, if you are not already a ‘competing’ member of NAMEF, you would be required to become an ‘Official’ member” (you must be registered with a club!).
